“He Who Walks Behind the Rows”

Earlier this week, I got to do one of my favorite yearly traditions: heading out to the cornfields to take photos. Thankfully, living out here in southwest Bakersfield means the fields are only a short drive from home.

I've always been obsessed with cornfields. There's something beautiful about them, but also something incredibly eerie. Maybe it's because they instantly remind me of the horror movies I've loved for as long as I can remember. Nothing beats the sound of the wind moving through the rows of corn. As it rustles the stalks, you hear all these little creepy noises, and before long your eyes start playing tricks on you. Every shadow and every movement makes you wonder if something is hiding just beyond the next row.

At the top of that list is Children of the Corn (1984). I was only four years old when it was released, but it's always stuck with me. I've been fascinated by Isaac Chroner's look for years. His unsettling expressions, paired with that wide-brimmed black hat, became a whole vibe for me. Over the years, I've collected quite a few big black hats, and they're all a little nod to Isaac. The film also takes place in Nebraska, where much of my family lives, which gives it an even more personal connection. Now that I'm thinking about it, I really need to read Stephen King's original story. It's definitely going on my reading list.

The cornfields also make me think of Signs (2002), In the Tall Grass (2019), and, most recently, Clown in a Cornfield (2025). One thing I especially loved was reading Clown in a Cornfield before seeing the movie. Usually I watch the film first, but since I've been reading a lot more lately, it was fun to experience the story the other way around for once.

Do cornfields remind you of any movies? I'd love to know which ones.

Saturday Night

Saturday evening we stopped by Sweet Bites N Ice for ice cream. I don't eat ice cream very often, but yesterday I decided it sounded good. I went with a completely over-the-top combination of Rocky Road and Pistachio, topped with hot fudge and an extra sprinkle of pistachios.

We took our ice cream home, got comfortable, and turned on Night of the Comet. That movie always makes me think of my husband, so every time we watch it, it brings a sense of comfort.

Sunday

This morning we were up early for a grocery run. I love shopping at 5 or 6 am because hardly anyone is there.

After breakfast, we washed the truck and tackled a few things around the house.

I've also officially decided that I'm decorating for Autumn/Halloween in August this year. I usually put up our Christmas decorations at the end of October because the holiday season always flies by, and I like having extra time to enjoy everything. Our home already has a cozy, creepy cabin feel year-round, so decorating for fall mostly means adding more pumpkins, vintage Halloween pieces, and all the spooky little touches I love.
